Fall is coming and so are the bikes
The nights are getting longer, temperatures are lower, bugs are fewer—it must be getting to be fall in Northern Minnesota. This is such a lovely time here at Raven’s Wing in Ely with the patio full of zinnias and marigolds, Hummingbirds still making regular visits, and cool comfy nights to settle in to read a good book or go out for a great dinner.
But, it is also the best biking time in Ely! Ely has so many great bike trails whether you prefer mountain biking, paved trail long hauls, or just a leisurely casual ride. The best place for mountain biking is Hidden Valley with more than 25 kilometers of trails. Check out https://www.elynordic.org for more info. The Trezona Trail just across the road from Raven’s Wing is a nice 4 mile ride through the woods and around Miners Lake. The trail is paved all the way and fun for hikers, runners, birders and cyclists. It is never crowded and offers some nice views of the lake.
Ely is also on the Mesabi Trail that runs from Grand Rapids all the way to Ely. A Mesabi Trail Wheel Pass is required to bike the tail and, in Ely, is available at Ely Bike and Kick Sled and Piragis North Woods Company, both easy to find right downtown. Go to https://mesabitrail.com for more information on the trail and things like shuttle services, maps and other helpful hints. The Wheel Passes are required for those 18 and older and cost $20annually or $10 for a three day pass.
And, if your favorite mode of transportation is your feet, we are proud to let you know that Ely has just received Trail Town designation. For you through hikers this is terrific news. The North Country National Scenic Trail will run right through Ely. As an official Trail Town, Ely will have signage in and out of town and be ready to provide hikers services. Raven’s Wing Bed and Breakfast would love to have you take a hiking break at our inn and enjoy some of the many things to do in Ely. Check out https://northcountrytrail.org/the-trail/minnesota/ for more information on hiking this great trail.
